In a world of big data, cloud services, and social media, it can be difficult to know how to keep your data safe and secure. In an environment with a wide variation in terms of technical literacy, the job of managing data gets even harder. Join us to share with peers about common challenges, discover new opportunities, and learn simple tools to help manage your data ethically.

In this workshop, you'll dive into the changing world of data, the importance of ethical data management, and how you can decide on safe, ethical ways to manage data throughout its lifecycle, from collection to destruction. You'll also learn about UWHH's pilot data management support program which is being developed in partnership with McMaster University, which provides non-profits with tools and one-on-one support from graduate students to create a data management plan. Participants will jump into interactive co-learning activities about the data challenges that our sector faces and to help tell us, how can our program be shaped to best support you? After this co-design process, participants will receive the data management tools, newly adapted with your feedback, and priority access to participate in our exclusive support program.

By the end of the workshop, you'll walk away with a better understanding of:

  • Different types of data and risk
  • Challenges and opportunities with the changing data landscape
  • How to manage your data ethically
  • How data management helps to manage risk, streamline operations, and ensure compliance
  • How data management can support diversity and inclusion
  • Simple tools for managing your data more responsibly
  • The exclusive offer to participate in our data management support program

UWHH is partnering with The/La Collaborative, which is a growing international network based at McMaster University, dedicated to social science and humanities knowledge mobilization, talent development and community impact. The organization leverages a collaborative platform to offer students a range of community-engaged opportunities that cater to the needs of community partners. http://www.yourcollaborative.org/
